DOC Constantine's Sword (2007) — documentary
⟡ Constantine and the Cross (1961) is the major screen treatment
⟡ Covers his rise, the Milvian Bridge, and conversion to Christianity
✝ Character Spotlight — Constantine the Great
Constantine's conversion is one of history's most consequential moments. It transformed Rome, birthed Christendom, and shaped Western civilization for 1,700 years. No modern prestige production exists yet — Constantine and the Cross (1961) remains the primary screen version, imperfect but functional.

Christian Rome & the Pagan Sunset
Sons of Constantine divide the empire · Julian the Apostate attempts to reverse Christianity — fails · Theodosius I makes Christianity the official state religion · pagan temples closed · Hypatia of Alexandria and the last flames of classical learning · the empire is formally divided in 395 AD — East and West, never to be reunited

⟡ Agora is set in Alexandria ~391–415 AD — watch it here
⟡ Depicts the violent Christian destruction of the Library and pagan learning
⟡ One of the most underrated Roman-era films ever made
📜 Character Spotlight — Hypatia of Alexandria
Agora (2009) is one of the most intellectually powerful films in this entire curriculum. Rachel Weisz plays the philosopher-mathematician caught between Roman paganism and the rising tide of Christian fanaticism. Essential watching for understanding what Rome became at its spiritual crossroads.

⟡ Gerard Butler plays Attila with genuine menace
⟡ Watch Attila (2001) then Sign of the Pagan (1954) as the classic comparison
⚔ Character Spotlight — Attila & Aetius
Attila and the Roman general Aetius grew up together as hostages in each other's courts — and then became the two greatest enemies of the age. The 2001 miniseries captures this tragic irony beautifully. Aetius is sometimes called "the last of the Romans." These two men are the final great drama of the Western Empire.
Phase XIX
455 – 476 AD
The Final Fall — The Last Western Emperor
A procession of puppet emperors controlled by barbarian generals · Odoacer, a Germanic chieftain, deposes Romulus Augustulus on 4 September 476 AD · no battle, no dramatic last stand — just a quiet deposition · he sends the imperial regalia to Constantinople · the Western Roman Empire is over after 500 years
FILM The Last Legion (2007) — Colin Firth, Ben Kingsley
DRAMA Barbarians Rising (2016) — Odoacer final episodes
⟡ The Last Legion follows Romulus Augustulus, the last Western emperor
⟡ Takes creative liberties but captures the pathos of Rome's twilight perfectly
⟡ Watch it as the emotional close to the Western story
🌅 The Last Roman Moment
Romulus Augustulus was a teenager when he became the last emperor. He was deposed without being killed — Odoacer pitied him. He lived out his days in a castle in Campania. The Western Roman Empire didn't end with a great battle. It ended with a sad, quiet letter to Constantinople. The Last Legion dramatises this poignantly.
