THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE
IN FILM & SERIES
Phase I
306 - 395
New Rome on the Bosporus
Constantine wins the West at the Milvian Bridge · the empire turns Christian · a Greek trading town is refounded in 330 as Constantinople
FILM Constantine and the Cross (1961) — Cornel Wilde
DOC Byzantium: The Lost Empire — Ep. 1, "Building the Dream" (1997)
DOC Byzantium: A Tale of Three Cities — Ep. 1 (2013)
⟡ Watch the drama first, then the two documentary openers as context.
⟡ Everything before this point is in rome.html — start there if you want the Republic and the West.
⚔ Character Spotlight — Constantine the Great
The founder. He moved the capital east and legalised Christianity, and both decisions outlived the Western empire by a thousand years. Cornel Wilde's 1961 peplum is the only feature-length screen biography — treat it as a colourful outline, not as history, and let John Romer's first episode do the correcting.
Phase II
395 - 476
The East Survives the West
The empire splits permanently · the Theodosian Walls rise · Attila is bought off and turned west · Rome falls, Constantinople does not
FILM Sign of the Pagan (1954) — Jack Palance as Attila
FILM Agora (2009) — Hypatia in Christian Alexandria ⟡
⟡ Sign of the Pagan is told from Constantinople's side — Marcian, Theodosius II, and the Hun problem.
⟡ Agora is optional and covers the eastern provinces, not the capital.
Phase III
527 - 565
Justinian and the Reconquest
The Nika riots nearly end the reign · Hagia Sophia is built in five years · Belisarius retakes Africa and Italy · the last serious attempt to make the Mediterranean Roman again
FILM Theodora, Slave Empress (1954) — Gianna Maria Canale
FILM The Last Roman (1968) — Orson Welles as Justinian
⟡ Watch Theodora first — it covers the rise and the Nika riots.
⟡ The Last Roman picks up the Italian reconquest and the fall of the Goths.
⚔ Character Spotlight — Theodora
Actress, then empress, and the reason the throne survived 532: when Justinian's court packed for exile she refused to run. Riccardo Freda's 1954 film is the only accessible drama built around her. It romanticises heavily — read her as the political operator the sources describe, not the melodrama heroine on screen.
Phase IV
610 - 717
Heraclius and the Century of Sieges
Persia takes Jerusalem and Heraclius takes it back · the Arab conquests strip Syria, Egypt and Africa within a generation · Constantinople holds twice behind Greek fire
DOC Byzantium: The Lost Empire — Ep. 3, "Envy of the World" (1997)
⟡ No major drama covers this era — documentary bridge recommended.
⟡ For the other side of the same wars, see persia.html and islamic.html.
Phase V
726 - 1025
Iconoclasm and the Macedonian Peak
Two centuries of war over images · the icon wins · the Macedonian dynasty pushes the frontier back to the Danube and the Euphrates under Basil II
DOC Byzantium: The Lost Empire — Ep. 2, "Heaven on Earth" (1997)
⟡ No major drama covers this era — documentary bridge recommended.
⟡ Episode 2 is the best screen account of why icons were worth a civil war.
Phase VI
988 - 1042
The Varangians in Miklagard
Basil II hires six thousand Rus axemen and never sends them home · Norse mercenaries guard the emperor · Harald Hardrada earns a fortune in the City before claiming Norway
SERIES Vikings: Valhalla — Season 3 (2024) — the Constantinople arc
⟡ Season 3 is the Byzantine season — Seasons 1–2 are Scandinavian and belong to viking.html.
⟡ Watch alongside viking.html for the same men seen from the north.
Phase VII
1071
Manzikert and the Loss of Anatolia
Romanos IV marches east and is captured by Alp Arslan · the Seljuks pour into Anatolia · the empire loses the ground that fed and manned it
SERIES Alparslan: The Great Seljuks (2021) — the Seljuk view of 1071
⟡ This is the enemy's telling — the only sustained screen treatment of Manzikert that exists.
⟡ The empire's answer to this defeat is the First Crusade, covered in islamic.html.
⚔ Character Spotlight — Romanos IV Diogenes
A competent soldier-emperor betrayed on the field by his own aristocracy, spared by Alp Arslan, then blinded by the court he came home to. No Western production has ever dramatised him. In Alparslan he is the antagonist — watch him as the tragedy the Byzantine sources actually record.
Phase VIII
1204 - 1261
The Fourth Crusade Sacks the City
A crusade aimed at Egypt is diverted to Constantinople · Venice profits, the relics leave forever · a Latin empire rules the ruins until Nicaea takes the City back
DOC Byzantium: The Lost Empire — Ep. 4, "Forever and Ever" (1997)
⟡ No major drama covers this era — documentary bridge recommended.
⟡ 1204, not 1453, is the wound the empire never recovers from. Watch this before the final phase.
Phase IX
1453
The Fall of Constantinople
Fifty-three days of siege · Mehmed II's cannon against the Theodosian Walls · Constantine XI dies in the breach and the Roman state ends after twenty-one centuries
SERIES Rise of Empires: Ottoman — Season 1 (2020)
FILM Fetih 1453 (2012) — the Ottoman epic ⟡
DOC Byzantium: A Tale of Three Cities — Ep. 3 (2013)
⟡ Rise of Empires gives both sides — it is the closest thing to a Byzantine account on screen.
⟡ Continue into ottoman.html: the City has a second life as an imperial capital.
⚔ Character Spotlight — Constantine XI Palaiologos
The last Roman emperor, ruling a city of perhaps fifty thousand people with seven thousand defenders on the walls. Offered his life and a province if he surrendered, he refused, took off his imperial insignia and died fighting. Rise of Empires: Ottoman gives him the only serious screen portrayal in English.
